HEMP MATS FOR MICROGREENS

Hemp growing mats are a popular method of growing sprouts and microgreens. This hemp mat is thick and made from pressed hemp fibre.

To use the mat, you first soak it in clean water. Then you place the mat in a flat bottomed tray. Next you spread the seeds on top of the mat and then simply keep the mat a little moist until you harvest the sprouts or microgreens.

To keep the mat and seeds/sprouts moist, you need to water a little every morning and evening. Apart from that all you need to do is wait.

Because this mat is made from clean, washed hemp fibre, it is a very hygienic way to grow microgreens in your own kitchen.

THE PURPOSE OF THE HEMP MAT

A hemp growing mat for sprouts and microgreens has 4 purposes:

#1
To keep the roots moist and still let it get oxygen between rinses.

#2
That your plants can grow their roots into the pad and thus grow upright. This gives the leaf tops the same amount of light.

#3
The mat allow for the roots to grow downwards. That way you can more easily rinse the roots with nutrient-rich water and avoid the rest of the plant getting under water.

#4
That you can easily move the plants and or harvest the parts of the plants you want without harming the others.

For these four reasons a hemp mat will provide an easy cultivation of microgreens. If you wish to save the expence for the mat, you can in stead choose to grow your microgreens and sprouts aeroponically in a SproutPearl sprouter. Learn more >

MICROGREEN SEEDS FOR THE HEMP MAT

The mat is created for growing all types of microgreens in your own kitchen. You can find the selection of organic seeds under SEEDS>

The selection of seeds varies according to my experience and the supplier’s selection, but these seeds are good for Micro Green:
Broccoli · Fenugreek · Endive · Fennel · Cress · Mizuna · Radish · Rapeseed · Arugula · Mustard · Sunflower.

HOW TO USE FERTILIZER WITH A HEMP GROWING MAT

Your plants feed on the nutrients in the seed for the first eight days of their growth. After day eight, the industry is exhausted. Since you grow microgreens for up to 12 days to be able to harvest larger plants, the plants need extra fertilizer from day 8 until harvest. See fertilizer for micro green>

Micro green hemp mat does not nourish your micro green. This makes it easy for you to dose fertilizer precisely to your plants. See the method below.

MICROGREEN HEMP MAT MATERIAL

The quality of hemp mats can easily fluctuate from one area of the mat to another and from delivery to the next. This is not the case with this hemp mat. This brand of hemp mat has been used for micro green production of large nurseries in Europe for several years. The mat is produced from pure hemp fibers and is consistent in quality. This gives you a stable cultivation on the mat, which makes it easier for you to grow microgreens successfully.

HOW TO GROW MICROGREENS ON A HEMP MAT

This is a short guide. You can see the longer guide with pictures here >

  1. Measure the amount of seed to match the size of your hemp mat. The seeds should be in a single layer and there should be some space between the seeds. Then pour the seeds into a clean glass and fill the glass with water so that the seeds are completely under water. Let the seeds soak for as long as shown on the seed bag – typically 8 hours.
  2. Wash the dish or plate and your hands thoroughly and rinse with clean water. Lay the mat so that it ends inside the edge of the dish / plate. Soak the mat in cool, clean water. Pour off excess water after 5 minutes.
  3. Rinse the soaked seeds with clean water by emptying and filling the glass once. Then spread the wet seeds on the mat.
  4. Let the seeds germinate without a lamp for the first 5 days, as the plants can only absorb the light when they have leaves.
  5. Rinse the mat with clean water for the next 6 days. After day 6, mix a little nourishment in the rinsing water.
Find organic fertilizer for microgreens >
  6. Harvest your microgreens by cutting the plants a few milimeters above the hemp mat. When you grown on hemp, you only eat stems and leaves on the plants. You put the roots and used mat in the green biobag, as it is 100% natural.

You will find more thorough cultivation instructions for microgreens on the mat in HOW TO GROW >

HOW TO RECYCLE THE ORGANIC HEMP GROWING MAT

You can only use the mat once because the plant roots grow close down between the fibers. Therefore, you can not clean the mat of roots after cultivation. You must therefore discard the mat with the roots after harvest.
The positive is that the mats used are 100% natural material. Therefore, you can put used mats in the green garbage bag. Alternatively, you can grow your micro green without a mat. See next section.

HOW TO GROW MICROGREENS WITHOUT A MAT

If you want to save the expence of a mat, then you can instead grow the plants directly in a SproutPearl. This cultivation method is even more environmentally friendly, as you can eat the whole plant including roots, and you can use the SproutPearl again and again for many years.

Microgreen Pea Shoot Kit

This kit gives you everything you need to grow your own organic Pea shoots at home.

The peas in your new kit are 100% organic and non-GMO. Like all the seeds in the FRESH SPROUTS shop, the peas are food approved and certified for sprouting. It ensures you bacteria-tested and germinating peas that you can eat raw after cultivation.

Tips for Pea Shoots

Tip1
Pea shoots do not need fertilizer. Peas are unique in that they absorb nitrogen from the air. Therefore, they do not need either fertilizer or soil to grow into delicious, crispy pea shoots in your sprout box. For the same reason, there is no fertilizer included in this Pea Shot Kit. All you have to do to grow the peas into delicious pea shoots is rinse them morning and night.

Space between the peas

Tip 2
Note that it is very important that there is some space between the peas when you want to grow them for pea shoots. This is because the peas rot if they lie close together for more than the 3 days that it takes you to grow pea sprouts. So if you want to grow your peas for pea shoots, you should thin them out a bit on day 3 so that the peas all lie in a layer and have a bit of air between each other.

Remove bad peas

Tip 3
There will always be a few peas that can not cope with the long growing time all the way to Pea shoots. You can recognize the ‘weak’ peas by chopping the pea. If you find such a pea during cultivation, remove it from the tray and rinse the tray afterwards so that the area is cleared of debris. The other peas continue to grow without problems. If you experience a lot of bad peas in the tray, it is typically due to the peas growing too densely. The solution is to leave more space around each pea in the tray if you want to grow them for pea shoots. This way they will be able to get rid of excess moisture and heat.

BPA-free and food proof sprouter

The SproutPearl sprouter in the Microgreen Pea Shoot Kit is a Danish design sprouter with 1 Lid, 1 Seed tray and 1 bottom. You can use this SproutPearl for both sprout and microgreen cultivation. It is designed and produced in Denmark from transparent BPA-free plast.

The plastic for the SproutPearl sprouter is BPA-free and food proof by the Danish Food Department. There are no phthalates, colour nor BPA in the plastic used for the container. So this is a container, you can enjoy with good conscience.

TIPS FOR YOUR
ORGANIC MICROGREENS

MOULD OR ROOTS

If you are new to the world of microgreen cultivation, then you may wonder why some plants form fluffy roots. These are called Root hairs. They look like mould for the first 2-4 days of your cultivation.

You wil especially see this on Broccoli, Kale, Sunflower and Radish. But corn and other microgreens may also form them. The key to ensure they are roots is to smell your microgreens. If the scent is like soil, the plants have gone bad and must me discarded. But if their scent is like fresh salad, then the plants are fine.

You can eat the root hairs same as the rest of the plant. They have much fibre, but not much taste. If you find the roots a bit ‘much’, you may choose to cut them off, when you harvest your mature microgreens.

FUN MICROGREENS SEED MIX

Are you tempted to mix the microgreen seeds from several seed bags to create your own sprouting mix?

I understand your desire, but I recommend you wait to mix the varieties until you harvest your sprouts or microgreens.

Why?

Because even if you cultivate your plants in a SproutPearl sprouter, then many of the seed varieties will not trive when growing close together with a variety that is not in the same bothanical family.

So to ensure you get the best experience when cultivating your microgreens, I recommend that you buy my pre packed mixed seed bags.

Water saving faucet aerator https://freshsprouts.net/product/water-saving-faucet-aerator/ https://freshsprouts.net/product/water-saving-faucet-aerator/#comments Sun, 10 Sep 2023 18:00:17 +0000 https://freshsprouts.net/?post_type=product&p=6099 FRESH SPROUTS

When you rinse your sprouts and microgreens with gentle water rays, the plants will thrive. The water saving faucet aerator lets you adapt the water flow to a single jet for seeds and legume sprouts. I also let you change the rays to devided, gentle jets for sprouts and microgreens with leaves. You simply adjust the flow by pressing or pulling on the lower part of the swivel.

Both variants are made according to EU standard for kitchen faucets. But please measure your own faucet to make sure it fits. The size of your faucet should be:
If outer thread it should be 2.1 cm.
If internal thread it should be 2.3 cm.
An insert for internal / external thread is included in the purchase.

The white/chrome version is made of hard, white plastic with a head in chromed brass. The white/white version is all hard plastic. All parts are EU approved for kitchen faucets and drinking water. It is easy to screw on the tap and also works for daily use.

WATER SAVING FAUCET AERATOR

The water saving faucet aerator is an adapter for your kitchen faucet. This is smart, because it allows you to adapt the water jet from the kitchen faucet to either be collected or spread into several thin jets. That way, your sprouts and microgreens will not be broken by too hard jets of water or by splashing water from the tap when you rinse your sprouts.

THREAD TYPE AND THREAD SIZE

Both colors of the water saving faucet aerator are the same size. They fit kitchen faucets that follow the set EU standards. However, it is a good idea to measure the size of the thread on your faucet, before buying your new aerator water swivel. That way, you are sure it fits your kitchen faucet.

The size of the outer thread must be: 2.1 cm
The size of the inner thread should be: 2.3 cm

Most taps are made with external threads – taps where there is a thread on the outside of the tap itself. There is a loose thread adapter for the product in the package, so if you have an internal thread, then the aerator can still be installed.

360 DEGREE ROTARY BALL HEAD

The water saving faucet aerator can rotate 360 degrees around its ball head in all directions. This makes it easy for you to adjust the water flow, so it can flush your sprouts or microgreens at just the angle you want for the task. It is also smart in your daily dish washing. Therefore, just leave the aerator on the kitchen tap. The total water jet is more air-filled than your normal water jet from the tap, so it can save a little on the water in everyday life.

INSTALLATION OF YOUR NEW WATER SWIVEL

The water swivel is a filter swivel that is easy to screw on your kitchen faucet by hand. You may need tools to unscrew your current aerator from the tap, or you may need to clean old lime from the thread. But then it is easy to screw on the new aerator.

CLEANING THE WATER SAVING FAUCET AERATOR

You can clean both versions of the aerator with a mild, liquid lime remover made for coffee mashines. Do not use harsh lime removers or other types of harsh chemicals for the aerator, as the chrome plating may become discolored.

EU-CERTIFIED AERATOR

The kitchen faucet swivel is produced in Germany. It are approved for kitchen faucets in accordance with EU rules for drinking water adapters and food contact.

Microgreen LEDLife full spectrum light bulb

Plant Light Bulb is a white Microgreen LED growth light bulb. It is essential for growing your microgreens in your indoor kitchen. This is because microgreen plants need bright light for their photosynthesis to grow well. If you leave out a growth bulb or grolys for your microgreens, your microgreens will:

  • become long and ruffled in the stem.
  • will not taste as good as the plants could taste.
  • grow much slower than necessary.
  • could not give you the full benefits of plant nutrients.

So I highly recommend that if you want to grow your sprouts on to the larger micro green, then you give yourself the pleasure of illuminating your plants well with a growth bulb.

Is the sun not good for Microgreens?

The short answer is: No. The reason is that sunlight in summer is too strong and hot for the young, vulnerable plants. Direct sun will simply scorch the plants. In winter, on the other hand, the sun is far too weak and promotes too few hours to provide enough light for your micro green.

Artificial light from a good growth bulb to micro green in your kitchen, on the other hand, is easy to control for you. With a plant bulb, you can give your microgreens plants 8-16 hours of strong light all year round without the plants sweating from heat.

Microgreen LEDLife full spectrum light bulb for Sprouts, Microgreens, Herbs and Salad.

Sprouts are the first small growth stage of your plants. You can harvest sprouts either with a short root or when they unfold their small cotyledons. If you only grow sprouts, you do not need a growth bulb.

A growth bulb, on the other hand, is always necessary if you grow microgreens. The plants turn into micro-green if they grow further beyond the stage of germinating with cotyledons. The transition takes place around day 7 of the growth. You can tell microgreens that the plants have unfolded their first true set of leaves. That is, the first set of leaves after the cotyledons. At this stage of the plant’s life, they simply need bright light to be able to convert the nutrients from fertilizer to roots, stems and leaves.

When should you give microgreen growth light?

Microgreens need growth light from the time they show the first small true leaves inside between the cotyledons. It happens around day 7 of growth. If your plants have grown cool, you will find that they grow slower than in heat. Therefore, it is easiest to keep an eye on the development of your plants.
You can read more about growth light for microgreens at this blog post >

FAQ on Microgreen LEDLife full spectrum light bulb

This bulb for microgreens, sprouts and pea growing has the following specifications:

Light color: Cold white as daylight

Base: E27
Kelvin: 5000 K
Lumen (lm): 2800
Beam angle: 38 °

If you grow your micro green in a SproutPearl Sprouter, one of these LED bulbs can effectively cover 4 SproutPearls with optimal light. Each SproutPearl Sprouter is 18 cm in diameter. You must rotate / rotate the trays every day so that the outer edges also get light.

How to get good taste in microgreens with Microgreen full spectrum LED light bulb

This LED bulb has a white light spectrum with 6400 kelvin. This spectrum is similar to daylight. The light is strong and has a color spectrum that supports both microgreen’s rapid growth and good taste. In addition, the light is cool white and therefore to last in the home rather than various other plant bulbs and grolys with blue or red tones which are intended to promote flower development etc. in larger plants.

Growth light for Sprouts, Herbs and Microgreens

This bulb glows cold white like a daylight bulb. Both sprouts, microgreens and other plants thrive on this kelvin. It also means you can use the bulb to fuel sprouts with cotyledons and yours for herbs if you want more growth and color in their leaves.

If you grow broccoli sprouts, it may be especially interesting for you to use the pear to get the sprouts to develop all their sulforophates. You can read more about this in the description under Seeds -> Broccoli.

Return rules

Please note that it is not possible to return this bulb after receiving the package unless the bulb is broken. This is because I guarantee that the bulb is unused due to the expected number of light hours for you as a customer. I therefore recommend that you check that your lamp has a round E27 socket, can withstand 14 Watts and has room in the screen before you buy this bulb.

MICROGREEN ALG A MIC FERTILIZER

Microgreen Alg A Mic liquid fertilizer from BioBizz for your tasty, home-grown and nutritious microgreens.

You only need to fertilize your edible micro plants, if you wish to cultivate sprouts for longer than 7 days. This is because sprouts get all their needed nutrients from their own seeds for the first 7 days of growth. But from day 8 and forward, the sprouts need nutrients from their surroundings.
Normally a young plant will get their nutrients from growing in good soil. But if you cultivate aeroponic or hydroponic microgreens – without soil – then the plants need fertilizer via the water every day.

HOW TO USE THE LIQUID MICROGREEN FERTILIZER

Here is how you mix and use the Alg A MIc Microgreen liquid fertilizer:

The fertilizer must first be used for the plants from day 8 of growth.

  1. From day 8 of your cultivation, mix the fertilizer in the ratio 1: 400 = 4 drops of fertilizer per 100 ml of clean water.
  2. Pour the mixture into the small transparent fertilizer spray bottle >
  3. Rinse your microgreen with cool water under a running tap to clean and moisten them every morning or evening.
  4. Drain the plants by tilting the tray and let excess water drip off.
  5. Only in the morning, spray the fertilizer mixture on the roots of the plants after the normal rinsing in step 4.
  6. Place the plant tray in the bottom of the SproutPearl. Place the whole sprouter under the growth light and leave them to grow.
  7. Repeat this method every morning and evening until you harvest the plants.
  8. Rinse the harvested plants and rinse them well in a bowl of clean water. Your plants are now ready to be eaten.

Notes for mixing ratio:
The mixing instructions on the bottle say 1:200. But you need to dilute with twice as much water. This is because the fertilizer is developed for adult plants. Microgreens need significantly less fertilizer than mature plants. So mix fertilizer to water in the ratio 1:400. That gives 4 drops of fertilizer to 100 ml water.

STORING THE MIXED ALG A MIC MICROGREEN FERTILIZER

Hygiene is always important, when you cultivate your own sprouts and microgreens. To keep the mixed fertilizer from forming algea and bacteria, I recommend that you:

  • Only mix a little fertilizer solution at a time for example in the small spray bottles in the store >
  • Keep both the unmixed Herb Fokus fertilizer and the spray bottle with the fertilizer in a dark and slightly cool place.
  • Empty the spray bottle and wash it, if you do not use the mixed fertilizer within 2 weeks.

This care for your fertilizer will also ensure a longer shelf life for your product.

As your plants only get a little fertilizer every morning and in addition are rinsed clean of any excess fertilizer in the evening, you do not have to worry about algae forming on your sprouts.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DO NOT FERTILIZE MICROGREENS?

Sprouts and microgreens are cultivated from organic seeds. Inside the seeds are nutrients enough to sustain the plants for the first 7 days of growth. So if you grow your sprouts using aeroponic or hydroponic techniques – without soil – and continue to cultivate the sprouts past the first 7 days, then you have to give the plants nutrients via fertilizer.

Without fertilizer, your microgreens would become more and more pale and eventually wither. With the right fertilizer – as Herb Fokus liquid fertilizer for Microgreens – on the other hand, your plants will continue developing the next set of leaves and turn into microgreens.

NUTRIENT-RICH MICROGREEN LIQUID FERTILIZER

This liquid  Microgreen Alg A Mic fertilizer from BioBizz contains all 14 vital nutrients for your home-grown microgreens. The fertilizer is created for full-grown herbs, but the composition is also perfect for microgreens of any variety. The only requirement is that you mix the contents of the bottle with more water so that your microgreen is not over-fertilized.

For microgreens, the fertilizer should be mixed 1: 400 with clean water. If you choose to mix the fertilizer in one of the small 100 ml spray bottles here in the shop, it is equivalent to adding 2 drops to the spray bottle and fill it with water to the top. See fertilizer spray bottle >

PLANT-BASED MICROGREEN FERTILIZER

The Microgreen Alg A Mic fertilizer by BioBizz is all plant based. It is created from pure mineral salts enriched with complex plant acids and extracts of seaweed. There are no visible remnants of the plants left in the fertilizer. Also this fertilizer contains no animal substances. It is suitable for organic farming.

AEROPONIC MICROGREENS IN SPROUTERS

Is the concept of aeroponic microgreens new to you? Maybe you have only grown your own sprouts until now. Then here is some great news for you: Sprout cultivation in a sprouter like the SproutPearl sprouter is aeroponic cultivation.

Aeroponic simply means that you let the plants grow without soil or any other substrate or medium for the plant roots to grow in. Just as you know it from the traditional sprouter.

To use your SproutPearl sprouter to cultivate microgreens in stead of sprouts, you only need liguid fertilizer and a good light bulb. Then you are all set to expand your joy of home-grown, edible micro plants.

An extra plus to cultivating your sprouts into the larger microgreens is just that – you get more plant from each seed. Plus microgreen cultivation is fun and no more work than growing sprouts.

MICROGREEN FERTILIZER SPRAY BOTTLE

Microgreen fertilizer spray bottle to spray liquid fertilizer on microgreen plants. This spray bottle makes it easy for you to mix the fertilizer with water and and spray it on your microgreens.

Your indoor, home-grown microgreens need extra nutrients from day 8 of their growth. This is because microgreens are cultivated from seeds, that contain nutrients to sustain the plants untill day 7 of their growth. After day 7 and forward, your plants need to take in nutrients from their surroundings.

In nature the plants take in nutrients from soil at that stage. But when you grow aeroponic microgreens for example in a SproutPearl – then you need to add fertilizer via the water from day 8. This is easily done with this fertilizer spray bottle.

HOW CAN YOU SEE IT IS TIME TO FERTILIZE MICROGREENS?

I write that you need to fertilize your micro plants from day 7 and untill you harvest your mature microgreens. But there is an even more precise way to tell when you need to fertilize. The time for you to start using the fertiliser is when you can see little new leaves form between the the small cotyledons or embryonic leaves. This stage is often reached around day 6-7 of growth. But if you live in a warm, sunny climate, then this stage may be reached faster for your plants.

So to sum up: If you only grow your plants into sprouts and harvest after 2-7 days, then you do not need to fertilize the plants. This is because the plants live of the nutrients in the seed at that young stage.

But if you wish to cultivate the sprouts past their sprout stage and onward to the microgreen stage, then you need to give the plants nutrients to live on. If you do not, the plants will first loose their color and taste and soon after wither and die.

Ergo you need to fertilize your plants as they start to develop their first set of true leaves between the small sprout cotyledons or embryonic leaf set.

HOW TO USE THE MICROGREEN FERTILIZER SPRAY BOTTLE

This is how you mix fertilizer and use the spray bottle for your microgreens:

  1. Mix the fertilizer with water in the ratio 1: 400 = 2 drops of fertilizer to 100 ml of water.
  2. Shake the spray bottle slightly, so that the fertilizer is mixed well.
  3. Rinse your tray with microgreens under the running tap with cool but not directly cold water.
  4. Drain excess water from the SproutPearl and shake the plants very gently to drip off excess water.
  5. After rinsing in the morning, spray the fertilizer mixture on the roots.
  6. Place the tray with the plants back in the lower tray/bottom of the SproutPearl.
  7. Place the Sprouter under the lamp with the Microgreen Grow Light LED bulb >
  8. Repeat steps 3-7 twice every day but only fertilize every morning.

Notes to remember:
You only need to spray a few times with the fertilizer mixture so that all the roots have a small layer of nutritious dew in them.
When working with fertilizer on your homegrown microgreens, hygiene is extra important. So empty and wash the bottom tray of the SproutPearl once a day to keep the roots healthy.

FOOD APPROVED MICROGREEN SPRAY BOTTLE

Specifications of the micro green spray bottle:

Size: 100 ml
Certification: Food approved PET plastic
Spray type: Atomizing/very fine dew
Transparency: Transparent bottle with a coloured top.
Hygiene: All smooth sides so it is easy to keep clean.

STORE MICROGREEN FERTILIZER IN THE DARK

Even if you only mix a little fertilizer solution at a time, it is important that you keep the spray bottle with the fertilizer dark. Darkness partly gives a longer shelf life on the fertilizer and partly the darkness prevents the formation of algae in the manure mixture.

For the same reason, you should wash the spray bottle well with dishwashing detergent if you do not use the fertilizer within 2 weeks. once a week. To keep an extra high hygiene, I also recommend that you wash it each time you mix new fertilizer in the bottle.

You do not have to worry about algae on your sprouts. Your plants absorb most of the fertilizer, you spray on the roots and excess fertilizer is rinsed off every night. In addition, I recommend that you empty the lower tray of the SproutPearl every day and wash it. This will let the roots of your microgreens breathe and stay healthy.
