Which dishes are good for Sprouts?

You can use your fresh sprouts in all dishes such as smoothies, dips, sandwiches, salad, soup and wok dishes.

If you eat sprouts for their nutrition, then you should know taht you will get the most nutrition by eating your sprouts raw. The dishes for raw sprouts would be juice, smoothies, dips, salads, or as a filling and garnish on sandwiches or in wraps.

If you use sprouts in juices, smoothies and dips, their antioxidants and vitamins will oxidize quickly. So you must eat those soon after preparation.

You can also enjoy sprouts in warm soups, wok dishes or casseroles and oven dishes. In warm dishes, the robust sprouts of sunflower, lentil, pea, chickpea and mung bean are best for keeping their crispness. The trick here is to first add your sprouts to the dish shortly before serving. You can also serve the sprouts in a bowl next to the hot dish for the guests’ own topping.

Are Sprouts delicious in all dishes?

Radish, Cress, Rucola, Endive and Fenugreek are strong in taste. This makes them delicious as a decoration rather than the main ingredient in a dish.

Alfalfa, Peas sprouts, Sunflower, Clover, Lentils and Mung beans, on the other hand, are mild in taste. This makes them delicious in smoothies, juices or as a base in salads. Neutral sprouts are also delicious to soften the flavor in otherwise strong salads or dips.

If you find the taste of your otherwise mild sprouts somewhat pungent, it may be because the small plants have not received enough light. Try making the sprout container brighter after the sprouts have unfolded their leaves. Then the taste becomes more round and soft.

Since sprouts cannot tolerate hot sun, you can instead place your sprouting tray under an LED growth bulb for up to 16 hours per day. For the last 8 hours, the plants must rest in order to grow properly.

The best dishes for Microgreens

Microgreens are just as delicious in your green dishes as sprouts.

Microgreens differ from sprouts in that microgreens are the next stage of the plants after sprouts. You grow Microgreen grows in 10-14. You only grow sprouts for 2-6 days. The extra cultivation time means that Microgreen must have fertilizer in order to grow after day 7, when Sprouts develop solely from the nutrition in the seed.

Whether you prefer one or the other size of plants is a matter of taste. Sprouts are elegant miniature plants that are very rich in flavor. The larger Microgreen plants, on the other hand, are really delicious as a base in a salad, smoothie or sandwich instead of store-bought salad.

You can see under SPROUT and MICROGREEN which varieties are suitable for each of the two categories.

Should Sprouts length have a certain?

There is an optimal length and harvest time for all Sprouts. The time depend on the development of the plant.

Sprouts of Lentils, Chickpeas and Beans must have 1/2 – 2 cm long root, before you should eat them raw. This is because legumes contain lectins that are neutralized as they grow. They grow to this stage in 2-4 days.

Leafy sprouts – Radish, Sunflower, Endive, Clover, Kale etc. – should grow until they unfold their leaves and the leaves develop deep color. They grow to this stage in 6-7 days.

The last group is Pea, Fenugreek and Corn. You can eat these three with either 1 cm root or with leaves. They grow to this stage in 2-10 days.

How do you get nutritious Sprouts?

Your sprouts are at their nutritional peak when they have reached the recommended length to be mature for harvest. You can read the recommended time on all seed bags from FRESH SPROUTS and in the previous section.

If you cultivate Sprouts for their nutritional value, I recommend that you harvest them just when they have matured. If you have cultivated too many to eat on that day, then the best way to keep them is to just let them continue to grow in their sprouter for a day or two more.

As all greens, the nourishment in the sprouts begins to oxygen as soon as you cut, mash or blend the plants. Therefore, if you do not eat the sprouts whole, you will get the most nutrients from the sprouts by eating the food shortly after preparing the dish.

Salad only with Sprouts

Can you make salad with only Sprouts?

You can make a whole salad with just sprouts. In that case, the mild Red clover, White clover, Alfalfa, Pea or Sunflower will do well as a base in the salad.

If you want extra protein in the salad, Lentils, Mung beans, Chickpeas and Peas are particularly rich in plant protein.

You can then mix up the salad with the tasty sprouts of Broccoli, Colza or Pink kale. Or you can choose the spicy sprouts of Fenugreek, Rucola, Radish, Cress or Endive.

Depending on your desired taste palette, you can mix a calm dressing of walnut oil, salt and pepper. This way the taste nuances of the sprouts still have a place in the dish.

How long will food with Sprouts stay fresh?

Have you made too much food and are wondering: Can you store food with sprouts in it?

The easiest way to understand the durability of sprouts in a dish is to compare sprouts with fresh lettuce. So food with sprouts does not go bad faster than food with fresh salad. Their durability is the same.

In the same way, the shelf life of dishes with sprouts will be shorter, the hotter or more cooked the sprouts are for the dish. If you have blended, sliced or chopped the sprouts, the dish will therefore have a shorter shelf life than if you have made a salad with raw sprouts.

If you have used raw, whole sprouts and let them retain some of the root, the small plants will actually continue to grow in the dish. Some even say that the sprouts give the salad a longer shelf life because they absorb excess moisture that would otherwise make the salad bad. Pretty clever, right?!

Questions from other readers

Are Sprouts delicious in all dishes?

Yes, sprouts look good in any dish but sprouts have many different tastes. For example Radish sprouts are strong and go well as garnish in any dish but they do not work in juice and smoothies. Peas and Alfalfa go well in any cold dish but not in hot ones. So choose the sprout that fit your dish.

Can you make salad with only Sprouts?

Yes, you can make a salad with a basic of shoots of Pea or Sunflower or sprouts of Alfalfa, Rucola and Clover. For topping and flavor enhancer you could use Radish, Mizuna or Fenugreek sprouts. In short: You can mix Sprouts into any dish you wish.

How do you get nutritious Sprouts?

You get the most nutritious Sprouts when you harvest them at the optimal time. Some need to have a short root. Others need little leaves to be mature and at their best peak of taste and nutrients.

Rose, Violet, Purple and Pink Sprouts and Microgreens are beautiful in food. The colors are completely natural and the taste is usually strong. Learn more about your sprouts in beautiful, reddish tones.

Tips on pink, rose, violet and purple Sprouts and Microgreens:

Rose Violet Purple or Pink Sprouts and Microgreens

Which Sprouts are pink or violet?

Rose, violet and pink tones are natural in many Sprouts and Microgreens. The beautiful red tones are often mixed with other colors in several Sprouts:

Rose radish sprouts are pink and green.
Violet radish takes on dark violet and pink tones.
Mustard sprouts turn violet and green.
Beetroot sprouts are bright pink.

Fennel takes on green and delicate pink tones.
Red cabbage turns violet and green.
Pink kale is a lighter violet than cabbage.
Red Mizuna is dark violet and green.
SEE LIST OF SPROUTS

Pink and red Sprouts are natural

Sprouts with pink, rose and violet colors are completely natural. The beautiful red tones belong to the group of plant pigments called Anthocyanins. It is the same type of coloring you find in blueberries, carrots, beetroot etc.

Today, as consumers, we are unfortunately used to food being filled with all kinds of dyes and unnatural substances. This is not so with your homegrown sprouts. The beautiful red tones are completely natural and part of the plant’s genes.

None of the seeds in FRESH SPROUTS shop are genetically modified (GMO). The seed varieties are only specially selected to be high quality, organic and good for sprouting. If you plant one of your seeds in soil, you will therefore get a completely natural plant. So you can enjoy your colorful sprouts with peace of mind.

How can you be sure that the seeds are organic and not GMO? When you shop in the FRESH SPROUT shop, I guarantee the quality of the seeds, as I only shop with EU-certified sprout seed suppliers. I am also food approved and eco-certified by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, so there is a close control of my seeds.

Stress can cause pink sprouts

Have you noticed that normally green sprouts such as sunflower, alfalfa and mung beans can turn pink? It is due to stress. Stress for the young plant manifest in them developing extra antioxidants that you see in the surface as pink coloring.

I shall explain…The pink coloring typically happens in Mung beans or Sunflower sprouts, but all sprouts can in principle suddenly get a pink tone on the surface. The sudden color change is completely natural.

When you see normally white/green sprouts get pink stems the reason is stress. The stress can be too high heat or too little moisture in the sprouter. Maybe you forgot the rinse the sprouts enough to keep them from getting too dry?

The pink colouring in sprouts can also happen if you have stored your sprouts in the fridge and move them out onto the kitchen counter or vice versa.

It may be tempting to try to see if you can get the beautiful pink colour. However, it is not a good idea to thirst or cold treat your sprouts unnecessarily. There is a certain risk that the stress factor affects your small, vulnerable sprouts so much that they wither, and that is no fun.

Can you eat stressed Sprouts?

Can you eat sprouts that have turned pink from stress? Yes, you can eat pink ‘stress’ sprouts with peace of mind. The pink color is only an expression of the plant’s own natural antioxidants working at high pressure to protect the small, vulnerable plant. As in the normally pink, pink, violet sprouts, the pink substance in the stressed sprouts is pure Anthocyanins.

In this case, the normally white/green sprout develops this antioxidant to protect the plant from stress. The reaction is the same as that which develops in the peel of otherwise green apples that have been hanging in the sun and have therefore turned pink.

You will notice that when the stressed sprout regains its balance and can continue to grow at rest, the red color will disappear again. However, you don’t have to wait. The pink sprouts provide just a little more antioxidant.

Do rose Sprouts turn green?

Would you like to prevent your pink and rose sprouts from turning green?

The solution is that you grow sprouts that naturally have pink, pink, violet and light pink colors. Then they won’t turn green over time. If you need mild sprouts with beautiful colors, I can recommend Red lentils. They turn a beautiful salmon color and are very mild in taste.

Why are some Sprouts green?

The green color in sprouts is just as natural as the pink tones in other sprouts.

The green color in sprouts is formed by chlorophyll in the plant’s chloroplasts. You can promote your sprouts’ formation of chlorophyll or you can inhibit it. If you inhibit the formation of chlorophyll, your otherwise green sprouts will become completely light green or downright white.
Radish sprout salad

Pink and violet Sprouts in food

You can use your rose, purple, violet and pink sprouts in food just like any other sprouts. However, sprouts in pink and violet tones tend to be stronger in taste than green sprouts. So I don’t recommend that you make a smoothie or juice out of Mustard or Radish Sprouts.

Instead, I highly recommend using your sprouts and microgreens of Radish, Mizuna, Mustard and Fennel for beautiful tasty garnishes or flavor enhancers. They do particularly well in salads, wraps, sandwiches and as a garnish on hummus, dips and appetizers.

Here are 7 great tips for your succesful Sunflower sprout cultivation:

  1. Mouldy sunflower sprouts
  2. Soaking airfilled seeds

  4. Pink stems on sunflower
  5. Hulled or unhulled seeds
  6. Sunflower sprouts in recipes

1 Is mould on Sunflower sprouts dangerous or harmless?

You will quickly notice that sunflower sprouts form root hairs – extra small roots on the main root. When these roots are small, they look much similar to mold.

As the sprouts grow, the roots will also grow stronger and longer untill they look like the familiar roots on any other plant.

You can eat the whole sprout including the white roots. Only the thick black shells can not be eaten, but should be disposed as green bio waste, as the hulls are to thick to chew and digest.

2 How do you soak Sunflower seeds before sprouting?

Soaking your sunflower sprouting seeds require a little more than soaking other seeds. This us due to the seeds being full of air.

So to soak sunflower seeds optimally, you need to force the seeds under water for all 8 hours of soaking.

One useful way is to place a bowl on top of the seeds and make sure the seeds are all submersed in water. Only this way will they absorb the nessecary water to sprout optimally.

3 Why do Sunflower Sprouts grow bitter?

Sunflower sprouts win with their lovely mild taste of fresh sunflower seeds with a hint of salad.

You will notice, that there may be a bit of a bitter flavor when the sunflower sprouts have just unfolded their leaves. There is a trick to this and it is all about light.

When the plants have had time to transform the sugars in their leaves and stems within 1-2 days after their leaves have turned green, the sunflower sprouts will turn are sweet with a soft taste. This espicially work if you place them in a lighter spot in the kitchen – just not in direct sun.

4 Why do Sunflower sprouts get pink stems?

Have you ever experienced the otherwise green and white stems on you sunflower sprouts turn pink?

The beautiful pink tones that form in your sunflower sprouts is caused by the plants being stressed. The stress is often lack of water or too high temperatures for the little seedling. It may also be caused by a fast switch between heat and cold.

The colouring is not harmful in any way. It is a natural antioxidant called anthocyanin. The same as in green apples turning red when exposed to hot sun during growth.

The sprouts will turn green again if you rinse them more often and place them cooler to prevent their stress.

5 Can you grow Sprouts from unhulled Sunflower seeds?

You can find unhulled sunflower seeds in most supermarkets, but they will seldom succeed as sprouts.

This is because sunflower seeds are very fragile and easily break. And broken seeds give bad, rotten sprouts. So to get beautiful sunflower sprouts, they must be grown from sunflower seeds with shells/hulls on them.

Also you should sort away broken seeds before soaking. Then it will be easier for you to keep the rest healthy during cultivation. When you choose Sunflower seeds certified for sprouting, the seeds have been handled carefully to avoid too many broken seeds.

6 How to use Sunflower Sprouts in salads and other dishes

Sunflower sprouts and microgreens are known to be full of nutrients. Because of this many use them in big quantities in juicing. If you choose to make juice from sunflower, you can get a little extra from growing them i  a SproutPearl sprouter.

This is because this sprouter allow for you to harvest and use the whole sprout in your recipe. If you grow in soil, you can only eat the stem and leaves.

have a sweet taste reminiscent of fresh sunflower seeds. Their flavor is light and delicious in raw salads and green smoothies.

If you prefer to unse inly the stems and leaves in dishes like sandwiches, salads or wraps, you can use the leftover roots blended into dips, spreads or smoothies.

7 Do not grow Sprouts from Bird seeds

It may be tempting to use bird sunflower seeds for your home-grown sprouts and microgreens. I do not recommend that.

Why not?

Because sunflower seeds sold for birds are often sprayed with pesticides that the sprouts take in during the cultivation. Or the seeds are not clean and teated for harmful bacteria which certified sprouting seeds has to be by law.

So choose organic sunflower seeds with shells/hulls on them sold espicially for sprouts. These will give you good, healthy sprouts and an easy cultivation.

Questions from other readers

Can you eat mouldy Sunflower sprouts?

Yes, if the Sunflower Sprouts look healthy with white roots and the sprouts smell good. Because then the ‘mould’ is actually root hairs which is just very fine roots that form on the tip of the thicker main root. This looks like mould the first 2-4 days of the sprouting process.

What kind of Sunflower seeds should you buy for Sprouts?

I recommended that you always buy organic sunflower seeds with shells or hulls specifically sold for sprouts. These seeds have undergone the necessary cleaning and treatment processes, ensuring they are free from harmful bacteria and pesticides.

Why do Sunflower sprouts get pink stems sometimes?

Sunflower sprouts get pink or rose stems when the sprouts are stressed. This may be due to them being too dry or the air being very hot. The solution is to rinse them well and place the sprouter in a cooler spot.

Can you eat Sunflower sprouts with pink stems?

Yes, you can eat the pink stemmed sunflower sprouts if they smell fresh and look healthy. The pink stems is a natural consequence of the sprouts being too warm and dry.
