What is mold on Sprouts and fungus on Microgreens?

It is extremely rare for your crops, even Sprouts and Microgreens, to get mold, fungus or mildew. I can say with 99.9% certainty that it is fine roots that certain sprouts develop in the first few days of their growth.

You will especially see these fine roots from day 2-4 of cultivation. The fluffy, ‘moldy’ roots grow on sprouts of Broccoli, Rapeseed, Pink Cabbage, Radish, Sunflower, Mustard, Corn.

‘Moldy’ roots are particularly evident when your young sprouts are a little too dry or warm in the sprouting tray. They show you that it is time to rinse the sprouts. On damp sprouts, the fine roots stick closely to the main root and are therefore invisible.

Professionals call these fine ‘moldy’ roots root hairs. Others call the mould-like roots fimre roots. Yes, dear child has many names. The fact is that root hairs on the sprout types mentioned are natural roots, which are actually signs that your sprouts are healthy and have well-developed roots.

What are root hairs on Sprouts if not mold?

Root hairs are the technical term for finely branched roots on certain varieties of plants. Root hair looks confusingly similar to mold. They are visible when your sprouts have only been growing for 2-4 days. That is, when the root has just grown out of the seed. After the 4th day, the root hairs look more and more like roots.

Sprouts mold very rarely. If your sprouts otherwise smell fine, you can therefore count on the fact that mold is actually root hair.

You can tell the fine roots from mold by looking more closely at a sprout with root hairs. The root hairs only grow from the thicker central white root on the sprout at the bottom of the stem.

The fine root hairs attach to the large root when the sprouts are wet. Therefore, they are easiest to see before you rinse your sprouts. You’ll notice that if you don’t remember to rinse your sprouts often enough that they get too dry, they’ll grow more root hairs.

Root hairs on Sprouts and Microgreens

Which Sprouts and Microgreens form root hairs?

It is only certain sprouts and microgreens that get ‘mould’ and ‘mold’ on the roots – the so-called root hairs. They are: Broccoli – Chinese radish – Pink cabbage – Violet radish – Rapeseed – Red cabbage – Mustard – Sunflower + certain varieties of grain.

You can’t control whether a Spire grows root hairs. It is in the genes of the plant. Root hairs are smart because they allow the plant to absorb the bit of moisture that is in the top of the soil.

Other plants have chosen to bet on a single long root without root hairs, which can quickly shoot down to low-lying moisture, after which the long root forms lateral roots. These sprouts are: Fenugreek – Red clover – White clover – Lucerne, on the other hand, has a single root.

The two root types each have a different strategy, both of which are about the plant’s need for water, nutrition and adhesion. Plants just bet differently based on evolution’s success criteria.

Lack of moisture causes more root hairs on Sprouts

Your sprouts form more or fewer root hairs in the first 2-4 days of growth, depending on how dry they grow in the sprout tray.

I wrote earlier that you cannot choose whether or not a seedling forms root hairs because the type of root is in a plant’s DNA.

On the other hand, you can help your sprouts not to form unnecessarily long and many root hairs. Plants are ‘intelligent’ and never waste their energy. The trick is therefore to rinse the sprouts morning and evening every day.

When there is always a bit of moisture around your sprouts, the little plants see no reason to waste precious energy on forming more root nets. Ergo, the roots will be shorter than if the sprouts sense a lack of moisture.

Healthy roots on Sprouts and Microgreens

Healthy roots on Sprouts and Microgreens are always completely white and odorless. The roots of a plant cannot stand drying out. If the roots dry out, they turn brown on the surface. Brown, withered roots cannot absorb moisture.

If the roots of your Sprouts or Microgreens wither, you should check whether the sprouting tray ends properly close to the bottom. Maybe you should rinse your sprouts a little more often?

If the roots are black, it means that the roots are rotting. This can happen if the roots stand in water for a long time and therefore cannot get oxygen. Both brown and black roots must be cut off, otherwise they will make the sprout sick.

So aim for white roots. They are a clear sign that you are growing your sprouts correctly and that they are thriving in your sprout container.

background 1

How do you get mould off Sprouts and roots?

As explained in this article, the mould and fuzz may not be fungus. They may very well be natural root hairs that develop on Radish, Broccoli, Colza, Kale, Corn and Sunflower sprouts. These fuzzy roots are most visible in the first days of the cultivation.

If the sprouts smell like fresh salat your are pretty sure, the fuzz is just healthy roots. If so you should not try to remove the root hairs as the sprouts need them to grow well.

If you wish to serve sprouts without fuzzy roots, you can rinse them well in cool water just before serving. The water will make the roots cling to the main root and become invisible.

Can you prevent fuzzy, mouldy sprout roots?

If you are growing a sprout variety that form root hairs – the fuzzy, white, mouldy roots – then you can not prevent the roots from becoming fuzzy. You should not wish it either, as the fuzzy roots is a sign that the sprouts thrive.

But you can prevent the sprouts from developing unnecessarily long root hairs. You do this by simoly making sure the sprouts never get too dry. This is because the root hairs form in excess if the small plants grow in a too dry environment. So remember to keep the sprouts moist but never directly soaked.

As the sprouts grow bigger the very fine roots will grow into thicker roots.

SproutPearl sprouter by FRESH SPROUTS

Enjoy healthy roots and sprouts in a good sprouter

In order for your Sprouts and Microgreens to grow into healthy plants, they need a good moisture balance in the sprout box. The container must partly retain the moisture and still allow the plants to get oxygen.

Sprouts are only as healthy as their roots. If you have difficulty achieving a good moisture balance around the roots, I can recommend a SpirePerle tray.

The SpirePearl is a FRESH SPROUT design. I created it in 2017 when I missed a functional and beautiful sprouting container. The tray supports the plants’ needs for oxygen, moisture and drainage on their journey from dry seed to crisp, ready-to-eat plant.

You can grow both the small Sprouts and the larger Microgreens in it.

Can you eat root hairs on sprouts?

Yes, you can easily eat its sprouts with ‘moldy’ roots. That is, if you are sure that the mold is root hair – see more above.

The fluffy roots are edible as are all the roots of your sprouts grown in a clean sprout container.

Roots with root hairs may look a little wild, but they are full of plant fiber. They are neutral in taste, which makes them easy to slice for extra filling in recipes with raw greens.

I typically blend root hairs myself into smoothies, dips or spreads. Other times I eat them directly from the sprout tray together with the rest of the sprout.

When I take pictures of Sprouts and Microgreens, I trim and eat the root hairs while styling the setup, as the thin roots tend to turn brown quickly in dry air.

Questions from other Readers

Why are my Sprouts full of white fuzzy fluff?

Some Sprouts grow very thin roots called Root hairs. This is not fungus nor mould. They are tiny roots that look like mould during the first 2-4 days of your sprouting. After that you can see they are actual roots.

Why is there fungus and mould on my Sprouts?

Fungus and mould on sprouts is most likely just tiny roots. These roots are most visible on Radish, Broccoli, Colza, Kale, Corn and Sunflower sprouts. They make the sprouts all fuzzy looking, but in closer inspection you can see the ‘mould’ is only formed on the roots.

How to I prevent mould and fungus in Sprouts?

To grow healthy sprouts free from mould and fungus, you must ensure high hygiene in the sprouter and only grow certified sprouting seeds. Do you still get mould? Maybe it is just root hairs. These form on Radish, Broccoli, Colza, Kale, Corn and Sunflower sprouts.

How do I get mould off my Sprouts?

First make sure the Mould is not just root hairs. These fuzzy looking roots are very fine, white roots that look like mould during the first 2-4 days of cultivation. They naturally develop on Radish, Broccoli, Colza, Kale, Corn and Sunflower sprouts.

Can you eat Mouldy Sprouts with fuzzy roots?

Yes, if you are you sure the mould on your sprouts is not Root hairs. You can tell root hairs from actual mould and fungus because your sprouts do NOT smell like dirt and the sprouts generally look healthy and crispy. Also Root hairs only form on the root harts of the sprouts. They naturally develop on Radish, Broccoli, Colza, Kale, Corn and Sunflower sprouts.

Which dishes are good for Sprouts?

You can use your fresh sprouts in all dishes such as smoothies, dips, sandwiches, salad, soup and wok dishes.

If you eat sprouts for their nutrition, then you should know taht you will get the most nutrition by eating your sprouts raw. The dishes for raw sprouts would be juice, smoothies, dips, salads, or as a filling and garnish on sandwiches or in wraps.

If you use sprouts in juices, smoothies and dips, their antioxidants and vitamins will oxidize quickly. So you must eat those soon after preparation.

You can also enjoy sprouts in warm soups, wok dishes or casseroles and oven dishes. In warm dishes, the robust sprouts of sunflower, lentil, pea, chickpea and mung bean are best for keeping their crispness. The trick here is to first add your sprouts to the dish shortly before serving. You can also serve the sprouts in a bowl next to the hot dish for the guests’ own topping.

Are Sprouts delicious in all dishes?

Radish, Cress, Rucola, Endive and Fenugreek are strong in taste. This makes them delicious as a decoration rather than the main ingredient in a dish.

Alfalfa, Peas sprouts, Sunflower, Clover, Lentils and Mung beans, on the other hand, are mild in taste. This makes them delicious in smoothies, juices or as a base in salads. Neutral sprouts are also delicious to soften the flavor in otherwise strong salads or dips.

If you find the taste of your otherwise mild sprouts somewhat pungent, it may be because the small plants have not received enough light. Try making the sprout container brighter after the sprouts have unfolded their leaves. Then the taste becomes more round and soft.

Since sprouts cannot tolerate hot sun, you can instead place your sprouting tray under an LED growth bulb for up to 16 hours per day. For the last 8 hours, the plants must rest in order to grow properly.

The best dishes for Microgreens

Microgreens are just as delicious in your green dishes as sprouts.

Microgreens differ from sprouts in that microgreens are the next stage of the plants after sprouts. You grow Microgreen grows in 10-14. You only grow sprouts for 2-6 days. The extra cultivation time means that Microgreen must have fertilizer in order to grow after day 7, when Sprouts develop solely from the nutrition in the seed.

Whether you prefer one or the other size of plants is a matter of taste. Sprouts are elegant miniature plants that are very rich in flavor. The larger Microgreen plants, on the other hand, are really delicious as a base in a salad, smoothie or sandwich instead of store-bought salad.

You can see under SPROUT and MICROGREEN which varieties are suitable for each of the two categories.

Should Sprouts length have a certain?

There is an optimal length and harvest time for all Sprouts. The time depend on the development of the plant.

Sprouts of Lentils, Chickpeas and Beans must have 1/2 – 2 cm long root, before you should eat them raw. This is because legumes contain lectins that are neutralized as they grow. They grow to this stage in 2-4 days.

Leafy sprouts – Radish, Sunflower, Endive, Clover, Kale etc. – should grow until they unfold their leaves and the leaves develop deep color. They grow to this stage in 6-7 days.

The last group is Pea, Fenugreek and Corn. You can eat these three with either 1 cm root or with leaves. They grow to this stage in 2-10 days.

How do you get nutritious Sprouts?

Your sprouts are at their nutritional peak when they have reached the recommended length to be mature for harvest. You can read the recommended time on all seed bags from FRESH SPROUTS and in the previous section.

If you cultivate Sprouts for their nutritional value, I recommend that you harvest them just when they have matured. If you have cultivated too many to eat on that day, then the best way to keep them is to just let them continue to grow in their sprouter for a day or two more.

As all greens, the nourishment in the sprouts begins to oxygen as soon as you cut, mash or blend the plants. Therefore, if you do not eat the sprouts whole, you will get the most nutrients from the sprouts by eating the food shortly after preparing the dish.

Salad only with Sprouts

Can you make salad with only Sprouts?

You can make a whole salad with just sprouts. In that case, the mild Red clover, White clover, Alfalfa, Pea or Sunflower will do well as a base in the salad.

If you want extra protein in the salad, Lentils, Mung beans, Chickpeas and Peas are particularly rich in plant protein.

You can then mix up the salad with the tasty sprouts of Broccoli, Colza or Pink kale. Or you can choose the spicy sprouts of Fenugreek, Rucola, Radish, Cress or Endive.

Depending on your desired taste palette, you can mix a calm dressing of walnut oil, salt and pepper. This way the taste nuances of the sprouts still have a place in the dish.

How long will food with Sprouts stay fresh?

Have you made too much food and are wondering: Can you store food with sprouts in it?

The easiest way to understand the durability of sprouts in a dish is to compare sprouts with fresh lettuce. So food with sprouts does not go bad faster than food with fresh salad. Their durability is the same.

In the same way, the shelf life of dishes with sprouts will be shorter, the hotter or more cooked the sprouts are for the dish. If you have blended, sliced or chopped the sprouts, the dish will therefore have a shorter shelf life than if you have made a salad with raw sprouts.

If you have used raw, whole sprouts and let them retain some of the root, the small plants will actually continue to grow in the dish. Some even say that the sprouts give the salad a longer shelf life because they absorb excess moisture that would otherwise make the salad bad. Pretty clever, right?!

Questions from other readers

Are Sprouts delicious in all dishes?

Yes, sprouts look good in any dish but sprouts have many different tastes. For example Radish sprouts are strong and go well as garnish in any dish but they do not work in juice and smoothies. Peas and Alfalfa go well in any cold dish but not in hot ones. So choose the sprout that fit your dish.

Can you make salad with only Sprouts?

Yes, you can make a salad with a basic of shoots of Pea or Sunflower or sprouts of Alfalfa, Rucola and Clover. For topping and flavor enhancer you could use Radish, Mizuna or Fenugreek sprouts. In short: You can mix Sprouts into any dish you wish.

How do you get nutritious Sprouts?

You get the most nutritious Sprouts when you harvest them at the optimal time. Some need to have a short root. Others need little leaves to be mature and at their best peak of taste and nutrients.

What are Sprouts?

Sprouts are plants at their smallest stage of growth. Some are cultivated until they have just developed a 1-2 cm long root. Others are cultivated until they get their first small leaves.

You can grow sprouts from different seeds, legumes and grains. However, you cannot grow just everything for sprouts, as not all plants are edible to humans when the plant is just a sprout.

But you can grow sprouts of over 45 plant varieties. Here in the shop you will always find 22 varieties. I take the other varieties in stock on occation. My seeds are always 100% organic and EU approved for Sprouts and Microgreens.

SEEDS IN THE SHOP

Are Sprouts healthy?

Sprouts are very rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, plant fibers and protein.

This is because sprouts develop their small, fresh and living plant from all the nutrients contained within the seed. In other words, the seed is transformed into a plant.

Since it is far easier for your body to digest a liquid-rich plant than a dry seed, your body gets a better yield from the nutrients when you eat the sprout.

As the small plants grow right up until you eat them after 2-6 days, sprouts retain their nutrition – they don’t wither quietly as harvested lettuce. In addition, you typically eat your sprouts raw.

This means that the nutrients do not perish during heating either. Instead, you get full benefit from all the nutrition in the little sprout.

That’s why some call sprouts a “superfood”.

Which Sprout is healthiest?

Some sprouts, like all other greens, contain more of certain types of antioxidants than other sprouts. Here are a few of them:

Broccoli sprouts are very rich in glucosinolates and sulforaphane. You can read more about Broccoli sprouts here >

Lucerne sprouts contain almost all vitamins and minerals and in abundance. Read more about Alfalfa sprouts >

Endive sprouts are the winner when it comes to quantity and variety of vitamins and minerals, as they contain them all. Read more about Endive sprouts >

Pea sprouts, Lentils and Mung beans are very rich in plant protein and fibre. This makes them suitable for those of you who are looking for green proteins for training or everyday life.

These are just some of the most nutritious sprouts. You can read more about each sprout under SEEDS.

How to use Sprouts in any dish

You can use your freshly cultivated Sprouts in all dishes.

Sprouts are available in all flavors from mild to spicy or strong. Their colors range from orange or green to light yellow, pink and dark violet. So there is always a sprout for any dish.

I find sprouts most beautiful and tasty when you use them raw in a dish. I use them in everything from smoothies, juices, dips, salads, wraps, soups and warm dishes. I even enjoy lightly fried, spicy chickpea sprouts as a healthy snack.

You can also use sprouts as pure ornaments or decoration on your dish. Get inspired by my Recipes.

How do you grow Sprouts?

Sprouts thrive by just letting them look after themselves. All they need is for you to rinse them morning and evening with pure, clean and fresh drinking water. This makes growing sprouts in your own kitchen very easy. You only need:

  • Organic sprouting seeds
  • A sprouter
  • Fresh drinking water
  • A clean corner on your kitchen table

The best place for the sprouter is somewhere in the kitchen where they get a little light but not direct sun. During a dark winter you can supplement with artificial LED plant light to ensure they develop well.

You can find a thorough step by step guide to grow Sprouts and Microgreens under How To Grow.

How to grow Sprouts in 6 steps

Sprouts are easy to grow even in a few days in your kitchen:

  • Buy a bag of organic seeds for sprouts + a sprout box.
  • Soak the seeds in clean water as shown on the seed bag.
  • Pour the seeds into your sprout container.
  • Place the sprouting tray on the kitchen table.
  • Rinse seeds/sprouts every morning + evening for 5 seconds under the tap.
  • Harvest the ripe sprouts, rinse in water and eat them in food.

That is how easy it is to grow your own Sprouts. Nature does most of the work, as long as you provide good seeds, clean water and a suitable sprouter.

In the FRESH SPROUTS shop you will find everything to get started quickly. Visit the webshop.

How long does it take to grow Sprouts?

You grow some sprouts until they just have a short root. Grow other sprouts until they unfold their first set of leaves. Therefore, some of your sprouts are faster to mature and ready for your food than others. Below you can see a quick breakdown. Each seed bag from FRESH SPROUTS also show the optimal germination time for your chosen seed.

There are three groups of Sprouts when divided by germination time:

Group 1
Sprouts of Beans. Peas and Lentils are mature in 2-4 days when they have a small root.

Group 2
You can grow sprouts of Peas and Fenugreek for either short roots or leaves.

Group 3
Sprouts of other seeds – Broccoli, Radish, Clover, Alfalfa, Sunflower etc. – are ripe after 6 days, when they have a small leaf with deep colors.

How do sprouts grow without soil?

It is natural to wonder how sprouts can grow without soil or fertilizer.

That is because the seed contains both the germ and all the nutrients needed to create a new plant. However the small sprout can only live off the seed for the first 6 days. If you want to grow your plants for more than 7 days, you have to give the plant a type of fertilizer.

Sprouts that have grown for more than 7 days are called Microgreens. Microgreens are also fun to cultivate yourself. However, they require a more time and space + they need both feritlizer and artificial light to grow well.

MORE TIPS FOR SPROUTS

6 rules for success with Sprouts

Sprouts are easy to grow when you just follow 6 rules:

  • Use only approved sprouting seeds for your sprouts.
  • Soak the seeds in clean drinking water for 8-12 hours in a clean glass before growing them.

Can you get multiple sprouts from one seed?

You can only harvest one sprout from each seed.

This is because inside the seed there is a germ which becomes the germ itself. Since you eat the whole seed including root, there is nothing left to form a plant more of the seed.

Fortunately, my certified sprouting seeds have been tested for high germination rate. Therefore, you are guaranteed that at least 98% of all seeds in the bag will germinate when you grow them as directed.

If you are not content with the germination of the seeds please feel free to contact me. There is often a practical reason why you are not getting the expected germination rate. Therefore you are very welcome to check my Checklist for Sick Sprouts before you contact me.

CHECK LIST FOR SICK SPROUTS

How long is the durability in fresh Sprouts?

Your sprouts can stay fresh for up to 1 week after they reach their mature state.

Note that your sprouts taste best when they have just reached their mature stage. You can cool your sprouts down in the refrigerator when they have matured to preserve their flavor longer.

In the fridge, sprouts of beans, peas, lentils and chickpeas can hold their flavor for two days. All other sprouts can keep the taste for up to 1 week.

The best way to store the sprouts is to put the whole sprouter in the refrigerator. Note that sprouts grow despite the cold. Therefore, they should be rinsed once every day, even if standing in the refrigerator.

Always drain away excess water so the sprouts do not rot due to wet roots or leaves. The sprouts should only be moist.

As it is often a challenge for enthusiasts to find sufficient organic greens for their reptiles, you can find this post a good read.

Because if you grow your own sprouts, you always have fresh, organic, cheap green at your fingertips.

GROW ORGANIC GREENS FOR IGUANAS A.O.

Reptile enthusiasts know that it is challenging to obtain a sufficiently varied selection of green foods for iguanas, agams, turtles, etc. Especially because reptiles are very vulnerable to pesticides and contaminated greens. It can even be difficult to find completely fresh, organic greens for herbivorous iguanas in the shops.

Many choose to find extra leafy greens in nature, but in the winter the possibility is limited. In addition, the area must be 100% organic and free of pollution from traffic etc. However there is a solution at hand. Literally. If you grow sprouts and microgreens in your kitchen, you can harvest rich variety of 100% organic greens all year round. Easy and much cheaper than buying greens from the supermarket.

GROW IGUANA FEED FROM ORGANIC SPROUTING SEEDS

The sprouting seeds here in this webshop are always certified 100% organic. They are also harvested, dried and packed with a special focus on maintaining a high level of hygiene in the seeds.

The seeds are also always bacteria tested for Salmonella, Listeria and E. coli. This is a requirement of the overall food authorities of the EU, as certified sprouting seeds are usually sold for the cultivation of raw greens to humans.

These strict rules on the seeds are for the benefit of you who grow sprouts as fodder green for your reptiles. For the strict control of seed purity and ecological status ensures you nutritious sprouts without pesticides or GMOs for your animals.

Did I mention that you usually grow the sprouts for your own salad? So maybe you also want a bite of your fresh sprouts and microgreens yourself?

WHAT SPROUT AND MICROGREEN IS THE BEST FOOD FOR IGUANAS?

You can grow many of the sprouts here in the webshop for fodder greens for your iguanas and other reptiles.

To be on the safe side, I always recommend that you discuss each variety of sprouts with professionals who have deep insight into feed for your unique breed of reptile. This should be before you serve sprouts for feed to your reptiles.

The varieties that all reptiles should be able to tolerate are: Broccoli, Red clover, White clover, Lucerne/Alfalfa and Sunflower.

However, you should NOT give sprouts of Lentils, Beans, Chickpeas and Soybeans to reptiles. Only pea shoots with over 10 cm stem and leaves are ok, but pea sprouts without leaves may still have too many lectins. It is precisely lectins that make legumes questionable for reptile feed. But note that if a professional in your type of reptile says it is ok, then you can listen to them.

SPROUTS WITH OR WITHOUT LEAVES FOR REPTILES

You will find that your reptiles often want to eat the sprouts already when the small seeds take root. Still, I recommend that you wait to serve the sprouts until they have got their first set of leaves and the leaves have gotten color.

This is because the seeds are rich in, among other things, vitamins and minerals, which are intended to be able to develop a small plant. This nutrient is tightly packed in the dry seed.

On the other hand, when the seeds have developed a juicy sprout with colorful leaves, it is much easier for your reptile to absorb vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in the plant.
The fact that the leaves have acquired color is a good indicator that the sprouts are ripe for harvest and at the top nutritionally.

GROW MICROGREENS FOR IGUANAS WITH OR WITHOUT LIGHT

The discussion of light or darkness when you grow your own sprouts has raged since the 60s, when sprouting had its first wave of popularity here in Denmark.

Since the purpose of growing sprouts as green fodder for iguanas and other reptiles is to give them a good boost of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, the answer is: Light!

Neither Sprouts nor the bigger Microgreens should not be left in the sun. Direct sun is far too hot, but you can place the sprouter on the kitchen table in a bright kitchen during summer. It is perfect for the plants to develop optimally.

In winter or dark weather, then at least 6-8 hours of artificial light daily from the 4 th. cultivation day is abundant to get tasty and nutritious reptiles green.

HOW TO FEED REPTILES WITH HOMEGROWN SPROUTS

You can choose to harvest the ripe, organic sprouts and microgreens from your sprouter and place them in the animal’s feeding tray. A more stimulating way is to put the harvested greens into a Feed Ball. Then the animal can harvest the sprouts itself. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Harvest the ripe greens and rinse them in a large bowl of cool water.
  2. Pour the water and the empty seed capsules from the sprouts.
  3. Place the clean sprouts loosely wrapped in the Feed Ball.
  4. Hang the Feed Ball up to your reptile.
  5. Remove the Ball after 12 hours and discard any residue.
  6. Wash the Ball in warm soapy water and it is ready again.

The Feed Ball is galvanized steel and can therefore be used again and again.

STIMULATING GREEN FEED FOR REPTILES

Are you looking for a great way to feed your reptiles and make their harvest of the feed stimulating? Then you can hang an entire sieve with ingrown sprouts inside your terrarium. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Grow your sprouts on the sieve in a Ceramic Sprout Tray.
  2. Let the sprouts grow firmly into the sieve with their roots.
  3. Take the sieve out of the bowl and rinse the sieve thoroughly.
  4. Remove any shells stuck on the sprouts on the sieve.
  5. Hang the sieve inside the terrarium on for example a branch.
  6. Remove the sieve with sprouts after 12 hours. Discard leftovers.
  7. Clean the sieve in warm soapy water and cultivate the next sprouts.

The sieve in the Ceramic Sprout Tray is stainless steel and can therefore be used again and again.

GREENS AND MICROGREENS FOR AGAMES, IGUANAS, TURTLES A.O.

Iguanas are not the only ones who benefit from your fresh organic microgreens. Bearded dragons, turtles and many other reptiles need varied greens every day.

You can therefore advantageously put some of your sprouts in your pet’s feeding bowl. Leave the sprouts whole or cut into larger chunks. This way, the reptile can easily recognize and select the plants on or off in their diet.

In relation to the varieties of Sprouts and Microgreens for Iguanas, then Lucerne – also called Alfalfa – will always be a good choice. Clover and Sunflower are also good for any reptiles. They should all be grown for the first set of small leaves. They are ripe when the leaves have turned completely green.

You can grow all three mentioned varieties in a SproutPearl sprouter. It takes 6-7 days from dry seed to ripe sprout.

WHERE DOES THIS KNOWLEDGE ON IGUANA FOOD COME FROM?

I send a warm thank you to Mia and Jesper from Jutland in Denmark. They have three beautiful Fiji iguanas and have been reptile enthusiasts for many years.

My warm thanks go to Mia for her help with facts for this blog post and testing possible products for iguanas. Mia is a trained animal caretaker and has always dealt with many different animal species. Two years ago, exotic animals captured Mia’s passion as they offer completely different challenges in terms of proper care, feed and habitat.

So Mia’s testing of fresh Microgreens and Sprouts for the iguanas is based on professional knowledge and several years of professional experience.

FAVORITE FOODS AND MICROGREENS FOR FIJI LEGUANS

Today Mia and  her boyfriend Jesper have 6 beautiful bioactive rainforest terrariums. They are the main attraction in their house and is home for their three beautiful Fiji iguanas. This picture above show some of the beautiful 3.5 m³ rainforest that the couple has built into the dining room. That’s enthusiasm!

The beautiful terrariums are inhabited by Edelhard, Elanda and Bette My. The three Fiji iguanas are pampered with no less than 10 different vegetables in the feeding bowl every single day.

The iguanas’ need for very varied, clean and organic greens led Mia to find FRESH SPROUTS in 2020. Ever since, the iguanas have greatly enjoyed the home-grown sprouts. They even allow hand feeding, when they are offered the fresh microgreens.

Mia uses both sprouts and microgreens for her Fiji iguanas. She has good results with serving Mung bean sprouts with 2½ cm root. She also serve the folloving sprouts and/or microgreens with 1-2 sets of leaves: Pea shoots, Sunflower, Pink cabbage, Red cabbage, Broccoli, Arugula/Rucola, Radish, Endive, Rape seed, Alfalfa/Lucerne, Cress, Mustard, Red and White clover. Mia also tests Beetroot sprouts, as her iguanas like to eat the bigger, fresh beetroot.
