Which dishes are good for Sprouts?

You can use your fresh sprouts in all dishes such as smoothies, dips, sandwiches, salad, soup and wok dishes.

If you eat sprouts for their nutrition, then you should know taht you will get the most nutrition by eating your sprouts raw. The dishes for raw sprouts would be juice, smoothies, dips, salads, or as a filling and garnish on sandwiches or in wraps.

If you use sprouts in juices, smoothies and dips, their antioxidants and vitamins will oxidize quickly. So you must eat those soon after preparation.

You can also enjoy sprouts in warm soups, wok dishes or casseroles and oven dishes. In warm dishes, the robust sprouts of sunflower, lentil, pea, chickpea and mung bean are best for keeping their crispness. The trick here is to first add your sprouts to the dish shortly before serving. You can also serve the sprouts in a bowl next to the hot dish for the guests’ own topping.

Are Sprouts delicious in all dishes?

Radish, Cress, Rucola, Endive and Fenugreek are strong in taste. This makes them delicious as a decoration rather than the main ingredient in a dish.

Alfalfa, Peas sprouts, Sunflower, Clover, Lentils and Mung beans, on the other hand, are mild in taste. This makes them delicious in smoothies, juices or as a base in salads. Neutral sprouts are also delicious to soften the flavor in otherwise strong salads or dips.

If you find the taste of your otherwise mild sprouts somewhat pungent, it may be because the small plants have not received enough light. Try making the sprout container brighter after the sprouts have unfolded their leaves. Then the taste becomes more round and soft.

Since sprouts cannot tolerate hot sun, you can instead place your sprouting tray under an LED growth bulb for up to 16 hours per day. For the last 8 hours, the plants must rest in order to grow properly.

The best dishes for Microgreens

Microgreens are just as delicious in your green dishes as sprouts.

Microgreens differ from sprouts in that microgreens are the next stage of the plants after sprouts. You grow Microgreen grows in 10-14. You only grow sprouts for 2-6 days. The extra cultivation time means that Microgreen must have fertilizer in order to grow after day 7, when Sprouts develop solely from the nutrition in the seed.

Whether you prefer one or the other size of plants is a matter of taste. Sprouts are elegant miniature plants that are very rich in flavor. The larger Microgreen plants, on the other hand, are really delicious as a base in a salad, smoothie or sandwich instead of store-bought salad.

You can see under SPROUT and MICROGREEN which varieties are suitable for each of the two categories.

Should Sprouts length have a certain?

There is an optimal length and harvest time for all Sprouts. The time depend on the development of the plant.

Sprouts of Lentils, Chickpeas and Beans must have 1/2 – 2 cm long root, before you should eat them raw. This is because legumes contain lectins that are neutralized as they grow. They grow to this stage in 2-4 days.

Leafy sprouts – Radish, Sunflower, Endive, Clover, Kale etc. – should grow until they unfold their leaves and the leaves develop deep color. They grow to this stage in 6-7 days.

The last group is Pea, Fenugreek and Corn. You can eat these three with either 1 cm root or with leaves. They grow to this stage in 2-10 days.

How do you get nutritious Sprouts?

Your sprouts are at their nutritional peak when they have reached the recommended length to be mature for harvest. You can read the recommended time on all seed bags from FRESH SPROUTS and in the previous section.

If you cultivate Sprouts for their nutritional value, I recommend that you harvest them just when they have matured. If you have cultivated too many to eat on that day, then the best way to keep them is to just let them continue to grow in their sprouter for a day or two more.

As all greens, the nourishment in the sprouts begins to oxygen as soon as you cut, mash or blend the plants. Therefore, if you do not eat the sprouts whole, you will get the most nutrients from the sprouts by eating the food shortly after preparing the dish.

Salad only with Sprouts

Can you make salad with only Sprouts?

You can make a whole salad with just sprouts. In that case, the mild Red clover, White clover, Alfalfa, Pea or Sunflower will do well as a base in the salad.

If you want extra protein in the salad, Lentils, Mung beans, Chickpeas and Peas are particularly rich in plant protein.

You can then mix up the salad with the tasty sprouts of Broccoli, Colza or Pink kale. Or you can choose the spicy sprouts of Fenugreek, Rucola, Radish, Cress or Endive.

Depending on your desired taste palette, you can mix a calm dressing of walnut oil, salt and pepper. This way the taste nuances of the sprouts still have a place in the dish.

How long will food with Sprouts stay fresh?

Have you made too much food and are wondering: Can you store food with sprouts in it?

The easiest way to understand the durability of sprouts in a dish is to compare sprouts with fresh lettuce. So food with sprouts does not go bad faster than food with fresh salad. Their durability is the same.

In the same way, the shelf life of dishes with sprouts will be shorter, the hotter or more cooked the sprouts are for the dish. If you have blended, sliced or chopped the sprouts, the dish will therefore have a shorter shelf life than if you have made a salad with raw sprouts.

If you have used raw, whole sprouts and let them retain some of the root, the small plants will actually continue to grow in the dish. Some even say that the sprouts give the salad a longer shelf life because they absorb excess moisture that would otherwise make the salad bad. Pretty clever, right?!

Questions from other readers

Are Sprouts delicious in all dishes?

Yes, sprouts look good in any dish but sprouts have many different tastes. For example Radish sprouts are strong and go well as garnish in any dish but they do not work in juice and smoothies. Peas and Alfalfa go well in any cold dish but not in hot ones. So choose the sprout that fit your dish.

Can you make salad with only Sprouts?

Yes, you can make a salad with a basic of shoots of Pea or Sunflower or sprouts of Alfalfa, Rucola and Clover. For topping and flavor enhancer you could use Radish, Mizuna or Fenugreek sprouts. In short: You can mix Sprouts into any dish you wish.

How do you get nutritious Sprouts?

You get the most nutritious Sprouts when you harvest them at the optimal time. Some need to have a short root. Others need little leaves to be mature and at their best peak of taste and nutrients.

Learn why your Sprouts and Microgreens may go bad and how you solve it.

The post Checklist for sick or bad Sprouts appeared first on FRESH SPROUTS.

FRESH SPROUTS

The Checklist for Sick or bad Sprouts show you the several different reasons for sick, bad or rotten sprouts. This way you can correct the issue and grow delicious Sprouts again.

background 1

Why do Sprouts go bad?

There is often a specific reason, why your Sprouts go bad. In 99% of cases the reason is bacteria in the soaking glass, water og sprouter.

A sprout is full of antioxidants. It is to support the vulnerable, young plant’s first days of growth. This is necessary because a plant out in nature is constantly attacked by bacteria and fungi.

Since your organic sprout seeds from FRESH SPROUT are natural seeds – that is, not genetically modified – the plant contains the completely naturally high level of antioxidants that it has from nature.

Sometimes the plant gets sick anyway. Most often the reason is bacteria due to lack of hygiene in the handling of the seeds, soaking or cultivation. But it may have other reasons, which you can see in the checklist below. The good news is that once you correct the cause of the imbalance, you will once again be able to harvest crisp, healthy sprouts.

Checklist tip 7

Poor germination percentage

A sprout can only be as healthy as the seed itself. Seeds from FRESH SPROUTS are purchased from Europe’s leading supplier of sprouting seeds. My suppliers guarantee the seeds’ germination percentage.

When I receive the seeds, I also take a sample myself for a germination test. Only if I am satisfied will I start selling the seeds. I repeat the germination test of the seeds every month thereafter. I do this to ensure that you always buy seeds with high germination capacity from me.

However, it may happen that conditions during transport to you have affected the seeds. Or perhaps your cultivation gives an unexpectedly low germination percentage. Please feel welcome to contact me so I may assist you to find the reason or compensate your purchase.

Checklist tip 9

Poor seed germination rate

When you buy your sprouting seeds, they are naturally dry and thus dormant. You break dormancy and start the germination by soaking the seeds in clean, cool drinking water in a completely clean glass.

Each type of seed requires a different soaking time. You can see the soaking time on your FRESH SPROUT seed bags.

It is important that you observe the recommended soaking time. If the seeds are left for too short a time, they will not absorb enough water and will germinate unevenly or not at all.

Conversely, if the seeds lie in water for too long, the seeds begin to ferment. It is just as bad for your seeds as too short soaking. You can read more about that in the next section.

Checklist tip 10

Foam in the glass while soaking

There can be three reasons for foam forming in the glass you use for soaking the seeds:

1) The glass was not completely clean before you soaked the seeds. It is very important that you wash the glass with a completely clean sponge or brush, which you only use for your glass for soaking and for the sprouting tray. Then you will not transfer unwanted bacteria to your seeds.

2) Insects may have ‘visited’ your glass while soaking. You must discard the seeds in this case.

3) If the seeds are soaked for too long they start to ferment. It is very unhealthy for the seeds and will destroy the ability of the seeds to germinate. You can see the optimal soaking time on all seed bags from FRESH SPROUTS. However, the recommended times only apply for seeds in this shop.

4) The glass is too hot, so the seeds start to ferment. The glass must be placed on the kitchen table in the shade. The same place where you also place your sprout container.

You can try to grow seeds that have had a little foam on the water. However, you must rinse very thoroughly after soaking and make sure that the seeds/sprouts do not go bad in the sprouting tray.

Checklist tip 4

Sprouts mold with dense white hairs

It is very unusual for your sprouts grown from high quality seeds to actually mold. Often the mold are root hairs – taproots – branched roots. Sprouts with root hairs are: Radish, Broccoli, Colza, Sunflower, Kale, Cabbage, Corn.

Root hairs are very dense roots that look confusingly like white mold. They are especially evident from day 2-4 of cultivation. Roots with root hairs can be eaten as long as they are white and have a distinct smell of fresh greens.

You can double check that it is root hair by looking at:

  • Are your sprouted seeds of good quality and are they complete with whole shells?
  • Are the seeds in one even layer in the sprouter so that water can drain off?
  • Has your sprouter been cleaned with a completely clean sponge/brush so that you have not transferred fungi and bacteria to the container?
  • Do your sprouts smell fresh – albeit strongly of fresh greens?

If you can nod yes to the four points above, then the mold is with 99% certainty not mold but root hair.

Checklist tip 3

Seeds and sprouts go smelly

Sickness in the sprouter can happen for two reasons:

  • The sprouter is not properly clean before you start cultivation.
  • The sprouter is homemade from a material that is not suitable for the constant influence of moisture.
  • The seeds have not been sorted before you started the cultivation.

If you have the first two points under control, the trick is to check the seeds. It is important that you check and sort the seeds before/after soaking. Always remove any damaged seeds. Seeds can easily have varying colors and be healthy, but if a seed is completely black and sunken, it must be removed.

Sorting is important as diseased seeds rot during growth. This creates a bad environment in the sprout tray, which infects otherwise healthy sprouts.

There will always be a few broken or damaged seeds in even the best seed mixes. Therefore, you should always check before/after soaking.

Checklist tip 5

Mold in seeds and sprout trays

Actual mold – not the above mentioned root hairs – in the sprouter is caused by poor hygiene around the seeds and tray. Fortunately, the solution is easy:

  • Check that your sprouting seeds are of good quality and that they have not expired.
  • Make sure you store the seeds correctly. They must be kept dark and slightly cool, but not in the refrigerator. If the seeds are too cool, condensation will form inside the bag – this will surely result in moldy seeds.
  • Check that the seeds smell good and are whole when you pour them out to soak. If you use a spoon for dosing, the spoon must be completely clean and completely dry. Moisture in the seed bag causes moldy seeds.
  • Check that the germination tray is completely clean before your cultivation. Always clean it with regular unscented dish soap and a clean sponge/brush that you only use for the tray. This is how you do not transfer bacteria and fungal spores to your sprouting tray.

In the next section, I show you how to clean your sprouter so that you have a fresh foundation for success with the next batch of sprouts.

background 1

How to clean your sprouter after bad Sprouts

Have you had rotten Sprouts, moldy seeds or sick Sprouts in your sprouter? Then it is very important that you clean the sprouting tray completely before the next cultivation. Because if you don’t clean the container thoroughly, your next seeds and sprouts will most likely be bad too.

How to clean your sprouter

  1. Remove all remaining plant parts from your sprouter.
  2. Wash all parts of your sprouter thoroughly with unscented dish soap and a clean sponge or brush. The sponge or brush need to be dedicated only to clean your sprouter in order to prevent unwanted bacteria transfered via the sponge or brush.
  3. Rinse with clean, warm water to remove all soap.
  4. Air dry and your sprout tray is now completely clean of all organic material and ready for your next round of healthy sprouts.

How to clean a SproutPearl sprouter

If you cultivate in a SproutPearl sprouter from FRESH SPROUTS, then you may choose to clean it extra well after the above explained washing.

  1. Mix 3% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) with clean, cool water in a glass tray. After mixing the hydrogen peroxide should be no stronger than 0.3%. This means that a 3% hydrogen peroxide must be mixed with cold water in a ratio of 1:10
  2. Put the clean SproutPearl sprouter in the mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide for 15 minutes.
  3. You will see bubbles forming on the tray during the 15 minutes. It is the hydrogen that works on organic material and oxygenates away bacteria.
  4. Rinse with clean, cold water. Your sprout tray is now completely clean of all organic material and ready for your next round of sprouts.

TIP You should buy 3% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in a pharmacy to ensure the quality.

Checklist tip 7

Sprout leaves have flaws

Sprouting seeds can in principle last for several years if they are stored optimally. The best storage of sprouted seeds is dark, dry, in an airtight container without condensation at up to 19 °C.

Your seeds will always try to germinate, but you can tell old seeds by the fact that all the seeds grow poorly and all the sprouts have ‘flaws’ in their leaves.
You can still eat sprouts from old seeds. They are just far more difficult to grow into healthy plants.

Checklist tip 3

Black leaves and/or roots

A sprout needs to be constantly slightly moist, but it cannot tolerate being directly wet for long periods of time either. This is because the sprout breathes as all living plants and therefore needs oxygen.

If the sprout is too wet, it cannot breathe and suffocates. It appears as black leaves, stems and/or roots.

The solution is that your sprouts do not grow too close and you drain the sprout tray and bottom after each rinse.

Checklist tip 2

Sprout grow smelly and soggy

It is important that there is a balance between the size of the sprouter and the amount of sprouts. If there are too few sprouts in the container, the plants easily dry out and wither. If there are too many sprouts, the sprouts have a hard time getting rid of excess moisture and heat, causing them to rot and smell.

There is a dosage overview in all manuals for sprouters bought from FRESH SPROUTS. If you have to choose, then too few sprouts per sprouter is better than too many.

You should not eat sprouts that smell bad. Discard them and clean your sprouter extra thoroughly, so that the next batch of sprouts get a healthy basis to grow well – If necessary, clean the sprouter as described above.

Checklist tip 9

Sprouts go bad every time

A clean environment is the alpha and omega for your sprouts.

Sprouts are naturally full of antioxidants which support the sprout’s life and survival against the bacteria that are all around us. But if there are too many bacteria, a sprout cannot keep them at bay. Then a sprout gets sick.

It is therefore important that you wash the sprout tray after each round of sprouts with a completely clean sponge/brush that you only use for your sprout tray and perfume-free dish soap. Allow the tray to air dry or dry with a clean tea towel.

If you have had disease in your sprout container, you should clean it extra thoroughly to clean away all bacteria as described above.

Quote

You must clean the Sprouter very well after each use to keep a high standard of hygiene in it.

Checklist tip 2

Brown spots on otherwise white roots

Do you grow sprouts for leaves in trays with grooves?

If the roots of your sprouts grow down through the grooves in your sprouting tray, they may turn a little brown where they are stuck in the groove. It’s not a real problem. The advantages of them sticking to the roots are more than the disadvantages. When sprouts grow upright:

  • they evaporate excess moisture more easily and it provides a healthier environment around the sprouts.
  • all the sprouts receive the same amount of light, resulting in uniform maturity.

To prevent the roots from breaking during cultivation, you should rinse gently. If necessary, put an water faucet aerator on your tap.

When you are ready to harvest the mature sprouts, you can also cut off the roots from below. Then it is easy to pull the sprouts out of the tray.

Checklist tip 9

Roots are stuck in the sprout tray

Do you grow beans, lentils, peas and chickpeas in sprouting trays with grooves?

Then you are probably frustrated that:

  • The roots quickly grow down through the small grooves.
  • Once the roots have grown in the grooves for a day, they are stuck!
  • The roots go brown where they are stuck in the tray.
  • You can’t pull up the sprouts without breaking the roots.

There are two tricks: You can either gently shake the sprouting tray every time you rinse. This causes them to roll around between each other. This way the roots do not grow firmly stuck in the grooves.

Or you can harvest earlier. Beans and chickpeas should only have 1,5 cm long roots. Lentils and peas must have 0.5-1 cm long roots. When the root is so short, these sprouts also taste best.

Short, stunted roots on sprouts

If the water from your faucet is drinkable then you can rinse the sprouts with cool water directly from the faucet. You don’t have to worry about lime in the water. It does not affect your sprouts.

On the other hand, sprouts cannot tolerate the bacteria that come from your mouth. So never drink from the glass you use for soaking and don’t touch the kitchen tap with your lips.

You know your sprouts have gotten bacteria from your mouth if all the sprouts in the tray become stunted and have oddly short roots, even though the stem is long.

Squashed, flattened sprouts

Sprouts love a quiet rinse in the morning and evening.

If the water, on the other hand, splashes down on the sprouts, so that the sprouts jump around, or the stems are masted under the water, you will soon get a sprout tray full of sick, rotten sprouts.

The solution is that you rinse more gently and turn down the water ray. Or you can put a water faucet aerator on the tap. The aerator lets you set the water to an oxygen-rich and soft concentrated jet or even gentler, scattered jets. All sprouts love this kind of gentle water rays.

Checklist tip 3

Dry and then rotten sprouts

Sprouts need to be constantly slightly moist in order to live. If you let your sprouts dry out even the slightest bit between rinsings, the sprout will completely or partially wither. This makes the sprout vulnerable to bacteria…and then they soon go bad.

Since a plant will always try to grow, even if it has ‘been weakened’, you will rarely see the sprout go bad right away. But it is now growing under unnecessarily difficult conditions.

The solution is to rinse your sprouts morning and evening with clean water and grow them in sprout trays that ensure a good environment.

Checklist tip 7

Reasons for dry, withered sprouts

Are you no sure, why your sprouts go dry and wilt? Then here are the most probable reasons for wilted sprouts:

  • You rinse less than every morning and evening.
  • The rinses are shorter than 10 seconds each time.
  • There are too few sprouts in the sprouter.
  • The sprouter is not designed well enough.
  • The sprouter is in sun or draft.
  • The sprouter is too close to an oven or radiator.

Once a sprout has dried out, it can no longer be grown, but will rot in stead.

Checklist tip 4

Spindly, thin and colorless sprouts

You get spindly, colorless sprouts when your sprouter is placed too dark.

Sprouts with leaves should be kept bright – but not in direct sun – as the plants use the light to form color in their leaves. If a leafy sprout grows in dark shade, it will bet on getting more light by growing longer, spindly stems. The solution is to simply move the sprouter closer to a light source.

Sprouts of peas, lentils, beans and chickpeas, on the other hand, should be grown in the shade, as they must be eaten before they form leaves.

Checklist tip 5

Withered and tasteless Sprouts

You will get wilted, tasteless sprouts if you let them grow too long.

A sprout lives off the nutrition in their seed. The seed is only intended as a starter package from nature’s side. Therefore, there is only enough nutrition in the seed to keep the sprout alive from the time it begins to sprout until it has borne leaves for a short week.

After 5-6 days with leaves, the nutrition is used up. The sprout loses color, flavor and slowly withers. So enjoy your sprouts in your food when they are ready to be eaten.

Checklist tip 2

Broken, rotten sprouts

Broken sprouts will rot rather than grow into crisp, delicious sprouts.

A sprout’s fine roots, stems and leaves are fragile and break easily. Therefore, sprouts need to grow undisturbed.

You can obtain this by gently rinsing with gentle water jets. Also gently move the sprouter around. If seeds and sprouts are to be distributed in the container, let the gentle jets of water move the sprouts rather than using your fingers or shaking hard. Treat sprouts as your best friends.

Checklist tip 7

Sprouts only grow once

With the exception of Pea Shoots, you can only harvest your Sprouts and Microgreens once from each seed.

The trick to being able to harvest several times from your Pea Shoots is to cut in the right place. First, let the pea shoots grow until they have several side shoots. You can then harvest the top shoots by cutting off the stem above the lower side shoot.

After a few days, a new stem will appear on the pea shoot, and you can then harvest it again.

You get healthy sprouts by growing the plants in clean, well-designed sprout containers. Place the container on your clean kitchen counter in light but away from hot sun. Rinse with clean, cold water morning and evening.

What makes sprouts bad and sick?

Typically, seeds or sprouts get sick or go bad due to poor hygiene or unclean sprout trays. Or if you forget to rinse them every morning and evening and drain excess water from the container.

Can you save bad / diseased sprouts?

No. Once the sprouts are wilted or smell bad, you should not eat them. Instead, clean the sprout tray thoroughly and start a new round of sprouts.

How should you clean a sprout container?

After each round of sprouts, you should:
1) Remove all plant parts from the sprout container.
2) Soak the container in clean warm water to soak up any remains of plants.
3) Wash all the parts with unscented, organic dish soap and a clean brush that you only use for that purpose. That way you can avoid transferring unwanted bacteria to the sprout container from leftover food stuck to the brush.
4) Rinse the soap away and your sprout container is immediately ready for the next round of sprouts.

What are Sprouts?

Sprouts are plants at their smallest stage of growth. Some are cultivated until they have just developed a 1-2 cm long root. Others are cultivated until they get their first small leaves.

You can grow sprouts from different seeds, legumes and grains. However, you cannot grow just everything for sprouts, as not all plants are edible to humans when the plant is just a sprout.

But you can grow sprouts of over 45 plant varieties. Here in the shop you will always find 22 varieties. I take the other varieties in stock on occation. My seeds are always 100% organic and EU approved for Sprouts and Microgreens.

SEEDS IN THE SHOP

Are Sprouts healthy?

Sprouts are very rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, plant fibers and protein.

This is because sprouts develop their small, fresh and living plant from all the nutrients contained within the seed. In other words, the seed is transformed into a plant.

Since it is far easier for your body to digest a liquid-rich plant than a dry seed, your body gets a better yield from the nutrients when you eat the sprout.

As the small plants grow right up until you eat them after 2-6 days, sprouts retain their nutrition – they don’t wither quietly as harvested lettuce. In addition, you typically eat your sprouts raw.

This means that the nutrients do not perish during heating either. Instead, you get full benefit from all the nutrition in the little sprout.

That’s why some call sprouts a “superfood”.

Which Sprout is healthiest?

Some sprouts, like all other greens, contain more of certain types of antioxidants than other sprouts. Here are a few of them:

Broccoli sprouts are very rich in glucosinolates and sulforaphane. You can read more about Broccoli sprouts here >

Lucerne sprouts contain almost all vitamins and minerals and in abundance. Read more about Alfalfa sprouts >

Endive sprouts are the winner when it comes to quantity and variety of vitamins and minerals, as they contain them all. Read more about Endive sprouts >

Pea sprouts, Lentils and Mung beans are very rich in plant protein and fibre. This makes them suitable for those of you who are looking for green proteins for training or everyday life.

These are just some of the most nutritious sprouts. You can read more about each sprout under SEEDS.

How to use Sprouts in any dish

You can use your freshly cultivated Sprouts in all dishes.

Sprouts are available in all flavors from mild to spicy or strong. Their colors range from orange or green to light yellow, pink and dark violet. So there is always a sprout for any dish.

I find sprouts most beautiful and tasty when you use them raw in a dish. I use them in everything from smoothies, juices, dips, salads, wraps, soups and warm dishes. I even enjoy lightly fried, spicy chickpea sprouts as a healthy snack.

You can also use sprouts as pure ornaments or decoration on your dish. Get inspired by my Recipes.

How do you grow Sprouts?

Sprouts thrive by just letting them look after themselves. All they need is for you to rinse them morning and evening with pure, clean and fresh drinking water. This makes growing sprouts in your own kitchen very easy. You only need:

  • Organic sprouting seeds
  • A sprouter
  • Fresh drinking water
  • A clean corner on your kitchen table

The best place for the sprouter is somewhere in the kitchen where they get a little light but not direct sun. During a dark winter you can supplement with artificial LED plant light to ensure they develop well.

You can find a thorough step by step guide to grow Sprouts and Microgreens under How To Grow.

How to grow Sprouts in 6 steps

Sprouts are easy to grow even in a few days in your kitchen:

  • Buy a bag of organic seeds for sprouts + a sprout box.
  • Soak the seeds in clean water as shown on the seed bag.
  • Pour the seeds into your sprout container.
  • Place the sprouting tray on the kitchen table.
  • Rinse seeds/sprouts every morning + evening for 5 seconds under the tap.
  • Harvest the ripe sprouts, rinse in water and eat them in food.

That is how easy it is to grow your own Sprouts. Nature does most of the work, as long as you provide good seeds, clean water and a suitable sprouter.

How long does it take to grow Sprouts?

You grow some sprouts until they just have a short root. Grow other sprouts until they unfold their first set of leaves. Therefore, some of your sprouts are faster to mature and ready for your food than others. Below you can see a quick breakdown. Each seed bag from FRESH SPROUTS also show the optimal germination time for your chosen seed.

There are three groups of Sprouts when divided by germination time:

Group 1
Sprouts of Beans. Peas and Lentils are mature in 2-4 days when they have a small root.

Group 2
You can grow sprouts of Peas and Fenugreek for either short roots or leaves.

Group 3
Sprouts of other seeds – Broccoli, Radish, Clover, Alfalfa, Sunflower etc. – are ripe after 6 days, when they have a small leaf with deep colors.

How do sprouts grow without soil?

It is natural to wonder how sprouts can grow without soil or fertilizer.

That is because the seed contains both the germ and all the nutrients needed to create a new plant. However the small sprout can only live off the seed for the first 6 days. If you want to grow your plants for more than 7 days, you have to give the plant a type of fertilizer.

Sprouts that have grown for more than 7 days are called Microgreens. Microgreens are also fun to cultivate yourself. However, they require a more time and space + they need both feritlizer and artificial light to grow well.

Can you get multiple sprouts from one seed?

You can only harvest one sprout from each seed.

This is because inside the seed there is a germ which becomes the germ itself. Since you eat the whole seed including root, there is nothing left to form a plant more of the seed.

Fortunately, my certified sprouting seeds have been tested for high germination rate. Therefore, you are guaranteed that at least 98% of all seeds in the bag will germinate when you grow them as directed.

If you are not content with the germination of the seeds please feel free to contact me. There is often a practical reason why you are not getting the expected germination rate. Therefore you are very welcome to check my Checklist for Sick Sprouts before you contact me.

CHECK LIST FOR SICK SPROUTS

How long is the durability in fresh Sprouts?

Your sprouts can stay fresh for up to 1 week after they reach their mature state.

Note that your sprouts taste best when they have just reached their mature stage. You can cool your sprouts down in the refrigerator when they have matured to preserve their flavor longer.

In the fridge, sprouts of beans, peas, lentils and chickpeas can hold their flavor for two days. All other sprouts can keep the taste for up to 1 week.

The best way to store the sprouts is to put the whole sprouter in the refrigerator. Note that sprouts grow despite the cold. Therefore, they should be rinsed once every day, even if standing in the refrigerator.

Always drain away excess water so the sprouts do not rot due to wet roots or leaves. The sprouts should only be moist.

You may wonder…What is a sprout?

The definition of a sprout is a seed that is either germinated until it has formed a root or until it has developed its first set of leaves.

Plants that have grown longer than the seedlings are referred to as microgreens, baby leaf, baby lettuce and more.

What is a sprout and seedling

SPROUTS OR SEEDLINGS

If I should be completely technically correct a ‘sprout’ is only the little white tip, which grows out of your sprout seed and eventually develops leaves at the end.

A seed may thus ‘sprout’. It is not ‘a sprout’. Not even when the plant gets bigger. Scientifically the right name for such a little plant is ‘seedling’.

SPROUTS – A LOVING TITLE

So why do I call the whole group of small plants ‘sprouts’ at this portal, in my videos, books and shop?

This is because ‘sprouts’ is an easy and affectionate name which sprout growers has embraced since sprouting became popular many years ago.

So technically today the name cover all types of homegrown miniplants grown in boxes without soil, fertilizer or artificial light.

What is a sprout versus organic sprouts
What do sprouts grow from

WHAT DO SPROUTS GROW FROM?

Sprout cultivation is possible because sprouts grow only on the nourishment that is stored in the seeds. The plants therefore neither need fertilizer nor soil.

This means that you only have to rinse the seeds and sprouts with fresh tap water twice a day. Nature takes care of the rest!

For this reason the small plants do not even need much light. They grow fine in the little light that is in a shady corner of your kitchen. This all makes sprout cultivation easy and hygienic.

THE PURPOSE IS NUTRIENTS

The purpose of sprouting certain seeds, grains, beans, lentils and peas and eat them raw is to gain greater benefit from all the nutrients.

Nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, protein and antioxidants are usually lost when you heat cook the ungerminated seeds, grains,
beans and lentils. Through sprouting you achieve, however, that the otherwise inaccessible nutrients in the dry seeds, are distributed throughout the little plant.

A plant that is easier to chew and digest for your body. And so you get more nutrients from the sprouts.

LIMITED NUTRIENTS IN SPROUTS

But there is only a limited amount of nutrients in the seed. Nature has created seeds to only nourish the plant to grow to the stage where it unfolds its first set of leaves.

Therefore you should harvest and eat the sprouts no later than a few days after they have unfolded the small leaves, if your primary goal of sprouting is nutritional benefits.

If you grow them for fun, taste og their beauty in your dishes, you can easily let them grow a little longer.

WHAT CAN YOU SPROUT?

You should not just sprout any seed you come across.

Some seeds, lentils, beans and peas are not suitable for sprout cultivation as they contain certain toxins – for example lectins in beans and lentils.

An easy rule of thumb is only to grow sprouts of varieties that are sold specifically for sprout growing from professional suppliers, that you can see knows about sprouting.

Alternatively, you can find a complete list of 44 suitable sprout varieties in my book FRESH SPROUTS – a guide to sprouting.
